Here's how the process generally works with a 1470nm diode laser:

1. Preparation: The patient is typically evaluated through ultrasound to determine the extent of the varicose veins and to plan the treatment. The area to be treated is cleaned and sterilized.

2. Local Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is applied to the area around the vein to ensure the patient's comfort during the procedure.

3. Insertion of Fiber: A small incision is made near the vein, and a thin fiber-optic catheter (laser fiber) is inserted into the affected vein under ultrasound guidance. This catheter is advanced along the length of the vein.

4. Laser Energy Application: The 1470nm diode laser emits energy at a specific wavelength that is well-absorbed by the water content in the blood and the vein wall. As the laser fiber is slowly withdrawn, the laser energy is emitted into the vein's interior lining, causing the vein to heat up.

5. Vein Closure: The heat from the laser causes the vein's collagen fibers to contract and the vein to collapse. This effectively seals off the problematic vein. Blood flow is redirected to healthier veins in the area.

6. Post-Procedure Care: Once the procedure is complete, the incision is often so small that stitches aren't necessary. A bandage is applied, and the patient might be required to wear compression stockings to aid in healing and reduce swelling.

7. Recovery: Recovery time is relatively short compared to traditional vein surgery. Patients are usually able to resume light activities on the same day and can gradually return to their normal routine over the following days to weeks.
